Happy Pi day. Nope I didn’t know about it either, I found out about it here – http://www.piday.org/ so hopefully your day will be full of Math.
Lots of things going on in the tutoring world – basketball tournaments, spring break, for some schools in my area the end of school is about 8 weeks away. If you haven’t started thinking about it, now is the time to think about what you’ll be doing this summer.
Also if you’re a procrastinator, you have about one month to file your taxes.

We’re going to talk about medical emergencies. Hopefully you will never have to deal with one, but if you do then hopefully you’ll be a bit more prepared. A reminder, I’m not a doctor and definitely not a lawyer. When dealing with medical problems you’ll definitely want to talk with both of those. If you’re ever in doubt of what to do in a medical emergency then you’ll want to call 911.
Being Prepared –
- Know what allergies your students have. If they have allergies you’ll want to make sure you don’t have something around that would cause them to have a reaction. If they’re allergic to something like bees, you’ll want to make sure they have epi-pens. They may even ask you to store one in the fridge. If this happens you want to make sure you clearly label it.
- Make sure you have emergency telephone numbers for your students. Make sure you have at least a couple of land lines, and 3 or 4 cell phone numbers.
- Make sure they know if they’re sick they shouldn’t come to the tutoring session. They won’t feel like studying / learning and you don’t want the flu.
- Take a basic first aid class. I would also recommend you take the advanced first aid class. Usually your local red cross will teach these for a small fee.
- Make sure you have a health release form / permission to have treatment form signed. You’ll want to consult with an attorney / health care professionals to make sure you have a form that will protect you and your student.
After the emergency –
- As soon as possible, when the emergency is over, write down everything that happened. Include if possible the times things happened.
Example –
3-14-20123 – 5:00 pm – Timmy Miller complained of some shortness of breath and trouble breathing.
5:01 – called 911 – they instructed me to place him on the couch with his head up and monitor him, which I did.
5:02 – called Ms. Miller, explained to her what the situation was.
5:06 – Timmy comfortable on couch watching television. Said that his chest is still a “little tight†but he is feeling better.
5:10 – Ambulance arrives
5:15 Ms Miller arrives
6:00 Ambulance crew leaves – gave Timmy a breathing treatment with Ms. Miller’s permission. Timmy and Ms. Miller leave. Timmy says he feels “much†better. - If it’s an accident / trip / fall make sure to take pictures of everything.
- If you need to notify your insurance company – this would probably be good advice no matter what happened.
