Hope your summer has gotten off to a good start. We’ll be running our summer schedule for the newsletters for the next couple of months. The next issue will be the first Thursday in July (July 3rd). August we’ll have a newsletter every Thursday to help you prepare to get the school year off to a great start. Then starting back in September we’ll resume our twice monthly schedule.
Business Reminder – if you pay IRS estimated taxes, don’t forget that you’ll need to send a payment by June 16th (since the 15th is on a Sunday).
Taking Time off from your business
Everyone should know you need to take some time away from your business. The reasons are numerous so I won’t go into them. Today’s tips I’ll give you some tips for things you’ll want to make sure you take care of before you go on a trip.
You can share where you’ll be going on vacation in the comments section of our Facebook page. We’ll be doing our vacations a bit different this year. My daughter is working, so instead of taking a week off, we’ll be traveling to a few concerts this year, which should be a whole lot of fun.
- Let your tutor students know at least a few weeks in advance. If you have tutors that you’ve hired for the summer and they will be continuing things in your absence, you may not need to tell them. You will tell them if someone will be tutoring for you.
- The next few items will be if you don’t have a staff – Chose one time of day to answer your email and check your phone messages from the day before. I normally do this during the morning, because I wake up at 4 or 5 am even when I’m on vacation (I guess the Army made me that way). It normally takes me only an hour or two, my family is still in the bed, so I don’t miss out on anything. Some people may recommend that you don’t check messages at all during vacations or time away from the office. In my situation I found that impossible to do.
- Should you forward your calls to your cell phone. I did this one year and regretted it. Now I just make sure and test my voice mail and make sure that I’m able to retrieve any messages that I may get.
- I normally make sure all of the bills are paid before I leave. If you’re gone for a week that should be fine. If you’re going to be gone for longer than that and have bills that may be due, then you’ll either want to pay ahead or have someone get your mail for you.
- If you have hired help – put one person in charge, you might want to give them a bump to their pay day for the time you’re gone.
- Let them know when they can call / contact you. The best way to do this is a few weeks before you go, put them in charge to start getting the feel for things. Also you’ll want to make sure all the other employees know who is in charge, where they can go to for answers.
- The most important thing is to have FUN and enjoy your family and friends.

Quote – “Sometimes it’s important to work for that pot of gold. But other times it’s essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow.â€
