Using Online Tutoring to Grow Your Business

I love the fall. I guess one of the big things I really like is the fact it isn’t too hot or too cold (most of the time). I’m a big fan of weather too. This is just a heads up to you, there is a hurricane that I think may have a significant impact on the Northeastern part of the US – particularly the coasts, but also further in land as well. I’m just giving you a heads up so you can prepare… if it doesn’t hit, then that’s great, but if it does then you’re ready for it.

In Case you missed it –

We’ve talked quite a bit about Pinterest over the past couple of weeks, if you missed it then you can check out the links below. Today we’ll start talking about using webinars in your tutoring business, we should finish it up on Tuesday and then we’ll talk some about paid advertising. I really can’t believe it is almost November.

Ideas for Tutoring using Webinars –

Today we want to show you some ways you can use webinars – and / or online video chatting for making some more money / offering more services for your tutor business. Just a reminder we go into great detail, detailing several methods you can do this in our how to tutor online program.

A webinar is usually a presentation you give online. The presentation can last for a few minutes or a few hours. People sign up for the presentation (and pay you for it), they are notified before the webinar begins and given a link on how to view it. Like we said before on Tuesday of next week we’ll tell you how to set these things up.

So how can you use this for your business?

One reminder with these you don’t just have to tutor locally but you can have an audience for anyone in the U.S. (or anywhere with an internet access and a way to pay you).

Think of questions that you are asked constantly – an example how to divide fractions easily, study tips, passing a test, the list could go on forever. Anything you spend time teaching during your tutor sessions you could have a webinar related to it.

You could go beyond one webinar and do a series of webinars over a period of time. One of the cool things about webinars is it is interactive. Participants can ask questions and you can answer them.

Do an online help line for students you currently tutor. Let your current students ask you or an employee questions online and you’ll be able to answer them.

Again these are just some ideas and I’m sure you will be able to come up with many of your own ideas.

News – It seems like weeks that begin with a holiday, I’m always a day behind. Today is Thursday but for whatever reason I keep thiking it’s Weds. Hopefully you had a wonderful Labor day weekend and did something fun and enjoyable. Today we’re beginning our series on how to tutor and we’ll continue every Tuesday and Thursday throughout September.

In Case you missed it –

We talk about our schedule –  http://www.cleverapple.com/blog/whats-coming-for-september/

Please note if you would like us to talk about something specific then please let us know.

Newsletter – next issues

We’ll resume our weekly newsletters beginning on September 6th (today) and continue most Thursdays until next summer.

Creating a Good Tutor Environment –

Make sure your student knows exactly what they need to bring to each study / tutor session. The last thing you should do before they leave is to make sure they know exactly what they need to bring next time.

Decorations – Affirmative signs Positive signs will remind your students’s subconscious mind of their potential to learn. Use lots of color (our brains love color!) and the following ideas to get you started:

  • I believe in me
  • Everything I do deserves my best effort
  • Learning is fun and natural!
  • Every challenge offers a gift

Got some additional ideas – make sure to leave it in the comments.

Follow a Routine – your students should know exactly what you’ll be doing in your tutor session. This varies quite a bit according to the student and the subject they are taking. Here’s some suggestions.

Review graded homework / tests – not what they missed. Make sure they understand why they missed it and if they can do the problem.

Review what they’re working on now. Identify / go over any problems they may be having with the concepts.

Answer any questions they may have on current homework – if tests are coming up help them make a plan for studying for it.

Eliminate Distractions – no cell phone ringing (every cell phone should be off – including yours). If you’re tutoring from home make sure there are no phones ringing, or televisions blaring. Some people like a bit of music, which I’ve found to be fine. You will also learn distractions for an individual student – different things will push their buttons. Eliminate those when you learn about them if possible.

Create a Consistent Work Space for Study

Make sure you have all the materials students need at hand. Reference books should also be close by in case you need them.

Light Bright
A reasonable amount of lighting that will let you and your students read properly, without putting stress on your eyes, or making them burn and water after a while. Try picking a place by the window during the daytime, and at night, make sure that you have a light that shines brightly on the study table. This is usually the best study environment.

We’ll resume our weekly newsletters beginning on September 6th.

Social Media –

I think Social Media is great. The main reason is because it allows you to get a group of people who are interested in your tutoring business. I have also found if you do a few things well – it can greatly impact your business.

++ I wanted to share this note from someone I follow about all things social media. If you buy something from those links I’ll get a commission +++

Some people think you’ve got to have a BIG personality to succeed on social media…Like those folks you see posting all the time that are always the life of the party.

But actually, the MOST successful people using social media are NOT who you think. They’re not the ones with the most friends.

They’re the ones quietly getting traffic, getting customers and making money — not by wearing a virtual lampshade on their heads –but by posting content that’s most relevant to their audience.

And the really smart ones have a system for doing it, like my friend Don’s. He makes his people love him and buy from him spending just minutes a day on social media. Check out his latest video to see how he does it:

https://btconsulting.infusionsoft.com/go/video3/blitzsocial

OH – and by the way – here’s the best part! You’re going to want to watch the video closely, because Don is going to reveal his solution to your posting frustrations.

Find out all about that here on the video.

https://btconsulting.infusionsoft.com/go/video3/blitzsocial

Whatever your personality, you’re going to like what you hear!

P.S. Remember — be sure to post a comment on the video page and share it to one of your social networks… you could walk away with a Google Nexus tablet that is up for grabs!

Preparing your business for hard times – Clever Apple Newsletter

The middle of summer for many folks is here. Hopefully your summer has gone well so far. It has been a crazy summer for us. My sister-in-law passed away last month and since then it has been a whirlwind of things happening as we try to help my niece (who is 19 and awesome) get everything squared away so she can move forward.

That is one of the reasons we haven’t been posting as much as usual but starting next week we should remedy that.

We’ll be continuing our series on what to do when something happens to you – we have one article about that today in our newsletter and we should have it completed next week on Tuesday / Thursday.

Next month we’ll begin a series on getting ready for the start of the school year. We’ll be giving you some tips on getting better organized and more important… getting more business.

There are a couple of ways you can stay up to date on new stuff we post.

1. Join us on Facebook. Click here.
2. Join us on Google Plus. Click
3. Use our RSS feed. http://feeds.feedburner.com/TutoringTips-HowToTutorBlog

Also in August we plan on giving some of our products away and having some sales on some different things we offer.

Continuing our series –

So what can you do to prepare your business if you had to be absent for an extended period – or if you died. This is for folks that have a smaller business, with no employees.

Like we mentioned in our other article –
http://www.cleverapple.com/blog/prepare-your-tutor-business-what-happens-when-you-need-to-be-away/
You want to have someone who you trust who knows your current list of clients and how to contact them. We’ll say for example you’ve been in an accident and will be in the hospital for several weeks and won’t be able to get around for a couple of months.

One thing I would recommend – even if you’re a small business is you either,

a) Become friends with another small tutor in your town. This can help you in a number of ways. You can sub for each other while you’re own vacation, or just have a bad cold, and they can be a substitute for you during a time like this. You’ll want to make sure you choose someone you can trust (sometimes that can be hard), and you’ll want to make sure they have a current list of your clients and the times you tutor them. Make sure you clarify how they will be paid if something happens to you.

b) Train a family member to do what you do. Allow them to join you while you tutor someone. Explain to them how you do things in your business, including how to take care of income you get, what bills need to be paid. This family member could be your daughter or son, parents, in-laws. They need to enjoy teaching. You’ll also want to explain to them how they will be paid if you can’t tutor.

This part is hard to talk about, but especially with recent events in my life it is something that needs to be talked about and dealth with. If you prepare for something, your family will be able to deal with it much better.

So what happens to your business if you die.

Again this is for the folks with a small business – no employees. These are only suggestions you’ll want to speak with your lawyer and your accountant – as well of course your family.

1. You can close your business down.
2. You can sell your business to the person we talked about in A above. Again you will want to make sure you speak with this person and get the prices nailed down. You’ll then want to get this in writing.
3. You can gift your business to the person we talked about in B above.

Whatever you choose to do, you’ll want to make sure you include explicit instructions in your will.

Are you prepared?

June 28, 2012 By: The-Apple

News – A big welcome to our new subscribers.

I know I promised you a newsletter last week, but we’ve had a rough June here. My Sister in law was killed in a motorcycle accident on June 15th. She was on her way to work, wearing a helmet, not going fast, she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. She wasn’t only my SIL but also a good friend and my next door neighbor (lived about 100 feet from me). She leaves behind a 19 year old daughter who just finished her 1st year of college. So the past couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of many different things. Although I know things will never be the same, I also know we need to move forward.

The next issue should get to you on July 19th.

You may be interested in this article we posted on Tuesday – http://www.cleverapple.com/blog/tutor-business-tips-getting-people-to-trust-you-4-ways/

We talk about getting prospective customers to trust you and some easy ways you can do that.

Are you prepared?

If something happened to you… what would happen to your business. I know sometimes these things are hard to talk about or even think about. The events of the past couple of weeks have made me realize that we should be prepared. So today we’ll be starting a series on just that (and we should have posts every Thursday on our blog talking about it, if you’re interested).

We’ll be talking about two groups of people.

Group 1 – you have a tutor business and you are the only tutor. You have less than 5 students.

Group 2 – you have a tutor business with more than 5 students. This includes those with employees.

We’ll also be talking about two different types of incidents.

You won’t be able to work for up to a month. Incidents when you won’t be able to work for more than a month.

We’ll conclude for now – still have a whole bunch of family stuff going on. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
To Do List for the Week –

  1. Let people know you care about them.

The best day to be happy is this one. Don’t wait until tomorrow; make up your mind to celebrate life’s victories today.

Have a wonderful week!

The Year In Review – Reviewing your tutor business

The Year In Review – Reviewing your tutor business
Français : Canard Blanc. English: White Duck

It’s been a good day for ducks. I woke up to thunderstorms. Lightning and my computers don’t play well together so I spent some time this morning reading and writing. My daughter will be taking her finals next week and then summer vacation begins.. my how the time goes by when you’re having fun.

Our tutor bootcamp is on sale thru the 30th. Details can be found here –

http://www.cleverapple.com/tutorbootcamp.html

The Year in Review –

As we wind down the tutor year and begin to transition to summer tutoring, it’s time to reflect a little on how well you did this past year. I find it’s always a good idea to review and then plan ahead.

  1. What did you do right? Everyone does something right. You’ll want to make sure you keep doing what you’re doing well. Everyone (yes everyone) does some things well. If you have a hard time figuring out what that is, ask friends, family, co-workers and your students. You want to make sure you accentuate those things you do well. I am good at getting leads.
  2. What did you do wrong? Just like doing things well, sometimes we make mistakes. There is definitely nothing wrong with making mistakes as long as we learn from them. You’ll want to figure out what the problem is.. and sometimes that can be difficult.
  3. How did your student’s do? How did they improve?
  4. Did you have any surprise successes? Why?
  5. How can you grow your business? What advertising technique worked best? What didn’t work? If an advertising method didn’t work, try to figure out why. Remember advertising needs to be targeted to people who use (and need) your services. Your advertising should also give them a reason to contact you today.

Words of encouragement –

Rebecca Mieliwocki, a seventh-grade English teacher in Burbank, Calif., was just honored at the White House by being named National Teacher of the Year.

I loved the comment she made during one of her press conferences.

“I am not the best teacher in America. There isn’t just one.”

You can read more here – http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2012/04/24/151275785/teacher-of-the-year-known-for-unconventional-techniques

To Do List for the Week –

  1. Do the exercise above. Note anything you need to change? Write a list and begin to write down action steps.
  2. Don’t forget about getting testimonials from your current students.

Clever Apple Newsletter for April
Bee resting on a flower (Eucera cf. longicornis)

Bee resting on a flower (Eucera cf. longicornis) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Hopefully you are busy as a bee as we hit crunch time for schools everywhere. It’s kind of funny, usually we have some harsh winters here, so schools start in very early August and we finish school at around the first of June. This year we had no winter at all and the kids missed I think five days of school total. So this year schools will be getting out the first week of May. So usually we’re pretty busy in May, but this month it has hit us in April. One reason the newsletters are a bit short.

From last time  –

An answer of the questions we posed to international tutors –

1- I tutor in Portugal (Where do you tutor?)

2- Here, the best way is to apply directly in “Study Centers” (How do you get your leads?)

3- First, observe how the work is done in the study centers: go there and ask questions about their methods. Then make a business plan and start up.
4 – Mathematics, geometry, biology (What subjects do your students excel at?)

5 – I don’t know yet because i haven´t started, but i presume that is the money management. It has to be carefully planned and executed. (What’s hardest about having a tutor business?)

Thanks very much Ana.

Words of encouragement –

I often tell aspiring writers that they will never finish a book if they strive for perfection, but if they don’t strive for excellence they will never publish one. Perfection is an unobtainable goal, imprisoning us in a cycle of repeated failure. Excellence is a shining star inspiring our best efforts and calling forth gifts we didn’t even know we had. Avoid perfectionism like the plague but strive for excellence with all your might.

  3. Figure out what you’re current students will need to be tutored on next year and will you be tutoring.

Winter has returned and we’ve had frost for the last couple of mornings. No frost in March… and now it gets cold in April.

We’ve also tweaked / tuned our website. We’ve added some new programs, made payment plans for some items and hopefully made it easier to use and understand. Here’s a good page that will let you see some of the changes.

http://www.cleverapple.com/comparetutors.html

I need your help –

I like to pride myself in being able to answer questions. I love to teach and being able to answer a question when someone asks is a great feeling. This week I was asked some questions about international tutoring that I didn’t know the answer to. So if you tutor outside of the US I have some questions for you. Or if you have a friend / relative who tutors internationally we would love to hear from them. You can just hit reply to this note or leave a comment on facebook.

  1. What country do you tutor in?
  2. What has been the most profitable way you’ve found of getting business?
  3. If someone were to start a tutor business in your country, what would be one piece of advice you could give them to make things easier.
  4. What do most of your students find difficult?
  5. What is the hardest part of owning your tutor business?

We would love it if you answered those questions and we’ll include it a future issue. Please make sure you send your contact information and we’ll make sure to credit you (and your business) with your comments.

To Do List for the Week –

  1. If you haven’t gotten your taxes ready – it’s go time.
  2. If you had a rough time paying your taxes this year… congratulations, that means you’re making money. I try to set aside $x a week into a “tax” fund. I then use this fund to pay my estimated taxes and unexpected expenses. Just remember, you may need to adjust if you have an unexpected increase in business.
  3.  Planning for your summer tutoring sessions should be in high gear… if not get started today.
  4. Take a walk with your family this weekend.

Have a wonderful week!!

Newsletter – How to get web hosting

January 19, 2012 By: The-Apple

News –

First we want to welcome all of our new subscribers and our new customers.

Weather here has been pretty crazy. We go from 20 to 60.. seems more like Spring. I have some friends in Washington state that had almost a foot of snow in their backyard (more snow than they’ve had in years). Today we’re going to talk about how to get hosting for a website – so you can build it, and we’ve included some links for older stories.

If you have any ideas of things you would like for us to cover please send us a note – you can reply to this email or if you’re on our blog you can leave a comment below.

There are many different hosting services where you can host your website. A couple of weeks ago we talked about getting domain name. The host is where you will actually put the files for your website. You’ll then have to point your domain name to the host. It sounds pretty complicated but it really isn’t.

We’ve been in this business for over ten years. We’ve had a number of different websites hosted with different hosting companies. Sometimes it can be difficult to have great service and prices that don’t break the bank.

The service we use is dreamhost.

Here is the link – http://www.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?1193070

The cost for a dreamhost shared account (as of this writing) was $8.95 / month.

To get started just click the link on the left – they are currently offering 2 weeks free. Next time we’ll talk about connecting your hosting to your domain name.

Steve Jobs – Not always a success – the commencement speech

October 6, 2011 By: The-Apple

Image via Wikipedia

Steve Jobs passed away yesterday and in the next days and weeks we’ll be hearing a lot about him. I have followed him from the beginning. One thing I would like to talk about today is his persistence. You’ll probably not hear very much about how many times he failed… and he did fail quite a bit. The thing to remember is he didn’t let failures stop him. He tried something different or tried it a different way.

Nick Schultz from the American Institute writes (and I quote) –

Jobs failed better than anyone else in Silicon Valley, maybe better than anyone in corporate America. By that I mean Jobs did what only the greatest entrepreneurs can do: learn from their failures. I don’t mean learn from their mistakes. I mean learn from their abject, humiliating, bonehead, epic fails.

Jobs (along with Steve Wozniak) brought us the Apple I and Apple II computers, early iterations of which sold in the mere hundreds and were complete failures. Not until the floppy disk was introduced and sufficient RAM added did the Apple II take off as a successful product.

Jobs was the architect of Lisa, introduced in the early 1980s. You remember Lisa, don’t you? Of course you don’t. But this computer — which cost tens of millions of dollars to develop — was another epic fail. Shortly after Lisa, Apple had a success with its Macintosh computer. But Jobs was out of a job by then, having been tossed aside thanks to the Lisa fiasco.

<end quote>

So if he had stopped at the failure, then we would have never gotten the iPhone, iTunes, the iPad etc. In fact after Lisa he went on to found another company Pixar, maybe you’ve heard of that… or maybe you’ve heard of Toy Story.

In 1996 he returned back to Apple and well the rest is history. You will also hear quite a bit about a commencement address he gave in 2005 to Stanford. I encourage you to watch it. It’s below –

Some things I got out of the speech.

Connecting the Dots

You have to trust that the dots will connect. You can only learn how they connected while looking backward. You should look forward and trust the dots will connect. You won’t always know how things are going to work out until it is done.

Love and Loss

At 30 he was ditched as the CEO of Apple. This actually freed him up to be creative and he started Pixar and other companies during this time. Sometimes life hits you with a brick. Find out what you love what you love to do… keep looking and DON’T SETTLE. He also met his wife during this time.

Death

If today were your last day would you do what you’re going to do. Remember that you’re going to die. No one wants to die but we all share this destination. Don’t waste time living someone else’s life. How poignant is that today.

Stay Hungry – Stay Foolish – my favorite quote of the whole speech – that and don’t waste time living someone else’s life.

So what does all this have to do with tutoring?

1. Don’t Give up.
2. The greatest thing about tutoring is we get to help shape a child’s life and their future. The Encouragement and Help we give them may be the only help and encouragement they’ve ever gotten. Remember this when you’re tutoring a difficult student and are getting ready to pull your hair out.
3. Live each day as if it were your last.
