Starting Out – things you should be doing.
Here’s a list of things you should be doing, just to make sure we’re on the same sheet of music.
A reminder – for each of these you want to make sure you track them. One of the first things you should ask every new tutor student is how you found them. Example from our list below, a free tutor session for your tear sheets, a 10% discount of every tutor session from referrals, four free homework help weekends for school referrals.
1.     Make sure you’re on the tutor list for each of the schools in your targeted area. If you aren’t getting the number of new students you want, you may decide to expand the area a bit. If you’re getting too many new students you may want to focus on fewer schools.
2.     Ensure you have tear sheets at all the places you can around the schools. Make sure you check them every week, and change them up every month.
3.     The students you already have know how to give referrals to you.
4.     You should have business cards and you should be talking to people at school functions. It’s fall now so you should be attending every football game you can, even if you hate football. You want to show that you support the school you’re tutoring at. You’ll be surprised at conversations you hear while waiting for a hotdog.

Think money for a minute
Next time we’ll start talking about some ways you can pay to advertise locally, before you do that you need to step back for a moment and think about your business. The number we want to get to is how much is each of your students worth. When we find that number out, then we will know how much money you can afford to spend to get another student. You want to take an average of all of your students. I’ll use an example, but you’ll want to plug in your own numbers. I like to us two years as a benchmark, if you haven’t been in business that long you can use whatever numbers you have.
Total number of students – 10
Total amount made – $3200.00
Amount made per student – $320.00
I like to take half of that – $160.00
So my recommendation is to try advertising for $160 – if you get at least one client out of that then the ad has been a success. If it hasn’t gotten a client and you’ve spent that much, then you’ll want to cancel the ad and try something different.
