News – It seems like weeks that begin with a holiday, I’m always a day behind. Today is Thursday but for whatever reason I keep thiking it’s Weds. Hopefully you had a wonderful Labor day weekend and did something fun and enjoyable. Today we’re beginning our series on how to tutor and we’ll continue every Tuesday and Thursday throughout September.

Newsletter – next issues
We’ll resume our weekly newsletters beginning on September 6th (today) and continue most Thursdays until next summer.
Creating a Good Tutor Environment –
Make sure your student knows exactly what they need to bring to each study / tutor session. The last thing you should do before they leave is to make sure they know exactly what they need to bring next time.
Decorations – Affirmative signs Positive signs will remind your students’s subconscious mind of their potential to learn. Use lots of color (our brains love color!) and the following ideas to get you started:
- I believe in me
- Everything I do deserves my best effort
- Learning is fun and natural!
- Every challenge offers a gift
Got some additional ideas – make sure to leave it in the comments.
Follow a Routine – your students should know exactly what you’ll be doing in your tutor session. This varies quite a bit according to the student and the subject they are taking. Here’s some suggestions.
Review graded homework / tests – not what they missed. Make sure they understand why they missed it and if they can do the problem.
Review what they’re working on now. Identify / go over any problems they may be having with the concepts.
Answer any questions they may have on current homework – if tests are coming up help them make a plan for studying for it.
Eliminate Distractions – no cell phone ringing (every cell phone should be off – including yours). If you’re tutoring from home make sure there are no phones ringing, or televisions blaring. Some people like a bit of music, which I’ve found to be fine. You will also learn distractions for an individual student – different things will push their buttons. Eliminate those when you learn about them if possible.
Create a Consistent Work Space for Study
Make sure you have all the materials students need at hand. Reference books should also be close by in case you need them.
Light Bright
A reasonable amount of lighting that will let you and your students read properly, without putting stress on your eyes, or making them burn and water after a while. Try picking a place by the window during the daytime, and at night, make sure that you have a light that shines brightly on the study table. This is usually the best study environment.

We’re also in the process of testing Pinterest to see if it does well (or not).  If it doesn’t work well, then we’ll let you know. If it does work well then we’ll let you know exactly what and how we did it.
