News –
First we want to welcome all of our new subscribers and our new customers. I know that we promised you a new format for the newsletter but we had some hiccups. I have a computer that I do most of our work on, create the videos and content for our membership site. We had the computer for about a year. One day when I tried to turn on it wouldn’t turn on. I enjoy working on computers so I bought a new power supply. It didn’t solve the problem. I called the company and unfortunately the warranty had expired (isn’t that the way it always happens). This was the week before Christmas. I needed a new computer before Monday because we had some work we had to do for our clients. On Monday we send spreadsheets to our clients letting them know how we did the previous week.
We got the ‘new’ computer on Christmas Eve. It took us till Monday to get all of the programs and thing working again. Monday we got our work done. Tuesday morning the computer wouldn’t turn on. I called tech support and they said I needed to send the computer back – so I sent it back and ordered a different computer from a different company.
So why do I tell you all of this, because it can happen to you. If it happened to you and you lost all of your businesses data… what would you do. This week’s tutor business tips is about how to make a back up plan for your data – it’s actually much easier than you think.

I’ve been thinking about doing a question and answer session using Google + Hangouts. It’s a video chat and we would answer questions live. If only one person would like to ask questions we’ll do it. These would be on Saturday for a couple of hours from 9 to 11 East Coast time. The first one could be this Saturday – if this would interest you – just reply to this email and we’ll send you instructions. Again this we would no cost.

Tutor Business Tips –
Creating a backup plan for your business information.
Back up your computer files.
You can do this a couple of different ways. Online backup is when you save your critical information online. Offline backup is when you save your documents to usually an external hard drive.
Online backup works well, but if you have a ton of computer files it may take awhile to upload these files (although they do it in the background). An example of a backup service is carbonite – http://www.carbonite.com/en/home/online-backup-software
With offline you’ll need an external hard drive hooked up to your computer. You can then use windows to backup your system.
Click on Control Panel. (this is for windows 7)
Near the top left under Systems and Security you’ll see “Back Up My Computerâ€.
Backup your core business documents.
I use a usb drive for this and put it in a safe. If you want anything important you can print it twice and then put it in a safe.
Don’t be like me – put this on your todo list today.

Today we’re going to talk about getting your domain name. Last issue we did some research, this week we’re going to purchase our domain. We need to know
a)    The geographic area we’ll be tutoring
b)   The subjects we’ll be tutoring
We’ll use two examples –
-        We’re tutoring Math in Lexington Ky. We’re tutoring high-school math.
-        We’re a general tutor that tutors online to anyone. We focus on high school tutoring.
So for the first we want something like – [subject][area]tutor.com. You can switch up the subject and area.
For the second we want to include tutor, tutors, or tutoring in the name.
For our examples we’ll go for Lexingtonmathtutors.com. You want a .com, you don’t want to hyphen the name, you want to make it easy for someone to remember it.
For our other example we want to do yourhighschooltutors.com.
When I wrote that both of those names were available. Now we’ll purchase the domain name.
- Go to http://www.godaddy.com/.
- Put the domain you’re looking for in the box and click the Go button. Domains are about $12 a year. You’ll want to purchase the domain for at least five years. Before you check out you’ll want to get a discount code.
- Go to google and search for Godaddy coupon. Godaddy usually runs a Super Bowl ad – during this time they always have some good coupons. The Super Bowl is in a few weeks.
Next time we’ll talk about setting up hosting. Remember with our new tutor program we do all of this work for you. The details can be found here –
