It has decided it wants to be winter here. We went from days around 70 degrees and now it is around 50 degrees with nights in the high 20’s mid 30’s. It reminds me now is a great time to be a tutor as students start to find out how they may be doing, and they start worrying about finals, you’ll want to make sure to include something about that in your advertising.
Also ACT’s are coming up – my daughter takes her first one this Saturday.
Following the Rules for Your Business – Â
First I would like to say, I’m definitely not a lawyer, the things we talk about are to help you find some guidance. You should consult with local people to make sure you’re complying with everything where you live.
It is impossible for us to know every regulation for every city and state in the U.S. I did get a good question this week though from a reader. They asked about assessment tests in their state.
A good first place to start finding the rules and regulations in your state is to ask a business owner in a similar business to tutoring. Or you can ask someone who already has a tutor business.
We’ve talked some about Federal things. You’ll also want to check out any regulations your state has. Kentucky has a one stop business portal. http://onestop.ky.gov/start/Pages/default.aspx
Most states should have something similar, you’ll just have to search for it.
Local rules – a great place to start is by calling your local government people, or visiting their website.
They will be a ton of things you won’t need for your business, that’s why I always recommend speaking to a lawyer to make sure what you need to do and can do without. I know lawyers are expensive, but in this case you will most likely save some money in the long run.
