News – We had a wonderful time this past weekend on a road trip with my daughter and wife. I love making memories with my family and have been doing it since my daughter was a baby and we went to see Barney in concert. She will cherish those memories, just as I do.
Tutor Business 101 – Part 6
Choosing A Domain name –
Today we’re going to get down to business – we’re going to choose a domain name and get our hosting set up. There are hundreds of different ways to do this, we’ve been doing this for more than ten years and we’ve found this is the easiest way to get it done.
You will have to spend some money, so my recommendation and I think I’ve mentioned it before, have at least a couple of tutor students. I like to spend money as I make it.
The domain name –
Several years ago if you had the subject of your website in the url for your business it would help you get search engine rankings. It would make it easier. Now it doesn’t work exactly that way, but I will say that it will make things easier, I won’t go into the why, but it will.
So let’s imagine I’m tutoring Math, in Hazard Ky. We want tutor / math / Hazard in the url if possible, but we don’t want the url to be hard to remember.
Now we go to Nameboy to get some ideas.
Type two of your keywords in the spaces – so I tried tutor and math.
Then click Go Nameboy Go. If results show green then the domain name is available, if not then the name has been taken. You could buy a name from a previous owner, but we really don’t want to do that.
We don’t want to buy a domain name from Nameboy, we just want to do some research to see if any good names are available or not. So I found that “mathtutorky†was available. I searched using “math†and “tutorkyâ€, and it showed me several results. Now point your browser to GoDaddy.
Enter the domain name you just found in the big box at the top and hit – hit search domain.
The next page it will say if the domain name is available or not. Click Select – you want the .com version if it is available.
Then click continue to cart – important don’t check out yet, we’ll be looking for some coupons first.
Some important notes –
Godaddy changes the way their website looks frequently. I thought about making a video but it would be obsolete in a few months.
They will try to sell you everything, including the kitchen sink. Below I have noted explanation of things you may want to consider, and one thing in particular that you will need.
Again, don’t buy anything just yet.
Protecting personal information – when you purchase your domain name you will be using an address – I use a PO Box and a business phone number – if you only have a personal address / phone you may want to consider doing this.
Hosting – we want hosting with a Cpanel because we’re going to install WordPress, so choose the cheapest ones. Today that price is $3.49 a month. Please note you will be paying for a year, the next year will be more expensive.
Click on continue to cart.
You can choose a length of time for your domain, I did five years. My total was $101.14.
At the bottom of the page is a place to enter a promo code. We’ll now look for one. My favorites are here.

Take your time, apply several different codes – normally you will only be able to use one. I got my price down to $83.14
Proceed to check out.
Make sure to note your user number and password, and you’ll be all set up. Next time we’ll talk about setting up wordpress.
As always if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to let us know.
